Spot the Differences Humans Miss
Reading two versions of a document and mentally tracking what changed is slow and error-prone. You'll catch moved paragraphs and rewritten sections, but miss a single changed word in the middle of a long paragraph, a deleted comma, or a subtle spelling change. Automated comparison catches everything.
This is useful beyond software development. Lawyers compare contract drafts to find clause changes. Editors compare article revisions. Students check how their professor modified their paper. Translators verify that updated source text changes were reflected in the translation.
The algorithm works at the line level first (finding added, removed, and changed lines) and then highlights individual word-level changes within modified lines. This dual-level approach makes it easy to scan for major structural changes while still seeing exactly which words were altered.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I compare entire documents?
Yes. Paste the full text of both versions. There's no practical line limit for the comparison. Very large texts (50,000+ lines) may take a moment to process but will work.
Does it show word-level or line-level differences?
Both. Changed lines are highlighted, and within those lines, the specific words or characters that differ are marked with a deeper highlight. This makes it easy to spot single-word edits in long paragraphs.
Can I ignore whitespace differences?
The comparison is exact by default — every space and tab matters. This gives you the most accurate view of changes, including formatting adjustments.
